Taiping Hostels

Sojourn Beds & Cafe

Sojourn Beds & Cafe hostel is situated in the very heart of Taiping, in a typical and classic renovated 1930’s shophouse. We offer our guests comfortable and cozy accommodation, with spacious lounges to chill out and socialise with other travellers.

Finally: a place for backpackers to rest, repose and socialise in central Taiping. Set in a 1930s shophouse, Sojourn's four-person dorms are a cut above standard creaky hostel bunks: each bed is part of a reinforced pod, allowing more privacy and less rocking from the top bunk. A balcony terrace and lounge area allow space to chat, locker access is included and there's wi-fi.

Sarah, Chigaco, U.S.

The perfect guesthouse! Very friendly and helpful staff, everything was clean, spacious bathrooms and a good atmosphere all over the place. Would love to come back once!

Jody, the Netherlands

This hostel has a lovely interior design. The bunks in the dorms are spacious, as are the lockers. It is very clean. There is a secure place to park a bike inside. And the people running it are really helpful.

Joshua, Canada

The hostel is one of the reasons why Taiping is our favourite place in Malaysia.

Great owners. Very good breakfast. Nice bathrooms. So comfy beds. Plenty of information about trains and buses to and from Taiping and about Taiping itself. Really really good vibes here.

Pavel, Czech

Our hostel is adjacent to the major sights, tourist office/clock tower, banks, money changer, post office, and day and night food court. The train station is 1.4km (a 19-minute walk) and the town bus station is 900m (a 12-minute walk) away. A perfect location for exploring beautiful Taiping!

Enjoy a slow and leisurely morning in our downstairs cafe with inside and outside seating, whilst enjoying complimentary 24/7 coffee & tea. We serve a simple breakfast (toast, margarine and jams) from 8 to 10am to get you going, and at other times there are cold drinks and fresh coffee for sale. Upstairs, you can enjoy two lounges and our garden terrace. We have book swap, luggage storage, town maps, travel brochures and bicycle hire (RM12 per day, RM5 per 3 hours).

We have 16 dorm beds and 6 private rooms, all with shared bathrooms. Prices include breakfast, Wi-Fi, guest computer, linen, towels, blankets, hot shower, soap and shampoo, hairdryers, adaptors and filtered drinking water. We take pride in keeping our hostel spotlessly clean for our guests.

Heritage Trail

Taiping was one of the first towns in Malaysia to be developed by the British. The prestige of the town is reflected in splendid colonial architecture including the decorous Perak museum, the gothic wooden All Saints Church and the British Officers' Mess that overlooks the Esplanade. Taiping's architectural gems can best be appreciated on a self-guided heritage tour. Immerse yourself in history and imagine what life was like for the 19th century colonial ladies and gentlemen!

The Lake Gardens

The Lake Gardens tour photo

The beautiful and serene Lake Gardens dates back to 1884 and was modelled on Kensington Park in London. The 64 hectare oasis is popular among locals who, in the early morning hours, come here to exercise and in the afternoon to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a picnic in one of the pavilions of the wonderfully landscaped park.

Maxwell Hill

Maxwell Hill tour photo

Maxwell Hill was the first British hill station in Malaysia, offering colonial rulers escape from the summer heat. There are still old colonial bungalows and gardens including a cafeteria at the top, at 1128 meters above sea level. Maxwell Hill is situated right behind the Lake Gardens and dominates the town around it. Nearby, along a stream at the foothills, is a large natural pool, the so-called Burmese Pool, which is popular among locals during weekends.
